tvOS 12 takes 4K cinematic experience to new heights

WWDC-2018-Atmos

Although Apple TV® often receives less attention than Apple's other platforms, it still gains new capabilities with tvOS 12.

Apple TV 4K has been a success since its debut last fall, offering customers the largest collection of 4K HDR movies, including free 4K HDR upgrades to previously purchased movies in customers’ iTunes® libraries. Beginning this fall, iTunes will be home to the largest collection of Dolby Atmos-supported movies anywhere, and these titles will also include Dolby Atmos audio for free.

Dolby Atmos makes audio sound more realistic by going beyond the simple right and left channels to provide 3D sound. You’ll need an Apple TV 4K, an Atmos-capable soundbar and Atmos-compliant video content to make this all happen. But with the right technology driven by tvOS 12, Apple TV 4K will be the only streaming player both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos certified, delivering the highest quality cinematic experience of stunning 4K HDR visuals and immersive sound that flows all around in three-dimensional space.

Two other new features work on both the Apple TV 4K and the fourth-generation Apple TV — Zero Sign-on and Cloud DVR — but require support from both apps and TV providers. Zero Sign-on learns your Internet provider, and if it’s the same as your TV service, automatically detects apps that need authentication and logs you in. This will work only with Charter Communications, the country’s second-largest cable operator, at launch, but Apple will expand to other providers over time. Similarly, the new Cloud DVR feature lets you watch programming you’ve recorded via the Apple TV, if your TV provider supports it. In the US, that again means Charter.

Aerial screen savers are a favorite of Apple TV users and reach new heights with tvOS 12. Apple, in collaboration with the International Space Station National Lab and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, unveiled brand new aerials in 4K HDR shot from space by NASA astronauts. Aerial screen savers will also be more interactive, allowing viewers to see the location information and swipe among dozens of beautiful aerials. Plus, users can tap the Siri Remote touchpad while a screen saver is showing to see exactly where the shot was taken.

Finally, in conjunction with iOS 12, tvOS can autofill passwords saved on your iOS devices so you don’t have to type them on the awkward onscreen keyboard. And if iOS 12 detects an Apple TV, it automatically adds an Apple TV Remote button to Control Center on your iPhone® or iPad®. For the couch potato in all of us, you can do that now, but you have to manually add the button in Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls.

Not only is this not your father’s TV experience, it’s not even yours from a year ago. See what you’re missing. Learn more about tvOS from CranstonIT at 888-813-5558 or support@cranstonit.com.
