Eliminating the delay in Apple Mail when sending email using SSL

Using SSL while sending and receiving mail from your mailserver is recommended. SSL is a type of encryption that makes your data unreadable to anyone that maybe eavesdropping on your data as it travels over the network between your computer and your mailserver. However, we've noticed with Apple Mail 3 ( Leopard ) a delay when sending out email to a mailserver using SSL.

Depending on your mailserver the delay can range from a few seconds to a few minutes. Recently we had a customer connecting to a GoDaddy account using SSL and the delay was about 7 minutes. After some troubleshooting, we discovered that the delay was being caused by a setting in Apple Mail's outgoing mailserver settings. The issue is this. When using the default port settings option, there can be a noticeable delay when sending email to an SSL mailserver.

To resolve this problem go the Menu Mail > Preferences. Then click on the Accounts tab and select the account you want to modify. Click on the outgoing mailserver pop up menu and select "Edit Server List". In the window that opens select the appropriate mailserver for the account and click on the Advanced Tab. Change the default ports setting to "Use Custom Port" and enter in 465 ( a default SSL port ). Close out and save your changes. Your mail should now send much faster.
