iOS9 Features Some Much Anticipated Improvements

Everyone’s favorite personal assistant is about to get even better when Apple rolls out its newest operating system for iPhones and iPads. Expected to be released in September 2015, iOS9 will feature some highly anticipated updates to Siri, the voice responsive, talking assistant that changed the way we use smart phones. According to Apple, the new Siri will be able to do more than ever before and understand with greater accuracy what you say.

With more intuitive capabilities, Siri will be able to set reminders based on the content of an email or text message, and anticipate your needs based on location. For instance, it will offer your playlist at the gym, or suggest when you need to leave for an appointment based on your current location.
If improved battery life, system performance, and security are your hot buttons, iOS9 has you covered. Downloading and updating apps will be streamlined and faster making the near constant updates that publishers push out a more efficient process. To improve battery life, you can use the low power mode to get one extra hour before charging becomes a necessity. Apple has also made it more difficult for others to access your Apple ID by strengthening passcode protection and adding two-factor authentication. Various system enhancements will mean faster scrolling and delivery of email, web pages, and messages, as well as better overall performance.

Other key features include an improved Notes app that enables you to easily incorporate maps, URLs, and photos into your notes and add bullets to create a checklist. The News app, added to the Home screen, will pull stories from top information sources and present them in a way reminiscent of print design, but allowing for the interactivity of digital publishing.

Navigating your way around town or country will be easier with Apple’s improved Maps app. The new version incorporates public transit directions for city dwellers and shows you points of interest by category via the Nearby feature.

iOS9 will be compatible with iPhones 4s and later; iPad 2, 3rd and 4th Generation; all versions of the iPad Air; all versions of the iPad mini; and the iPod Touch 5th Generation. The new operating system will be available for free after its release. Cranston IT highly recommends not immediately installing new OS releases as there will likely be bugs, and third party apps may not run properly until they are updated to work with iOS9.  We will monitor and test the new OS upon release and let customers know when it’s best to upgrade.
