iPad vs. the World of Tablets

Tis the season... for tablets, that is. It seems that all the big tech names are coming out with one. So, how are you to choose? It all depends on your particular needs.

The tablets we looked at include the iPads, the new iPad Mini, the Kindle Fires, and the Google Nexus 7.

The sleekest, best performing powerhouses? The iPads. They are known for their performance and features and they will integrate beautifully with other Apple products. Apple also has the best selection of good quality apps, by far.

If you shop around at this time of year you can get a 16 GB iPad 2 for around $400. If you’re willing to buy a refurbished model, it could be a little less. You can find the two newest versions of the iPad for as low as $499. These third and fourth generation iPads both have top of the line features including the eye pleasing retina display.

The newest player in the Apple field, the iPad Mini is selling for $329. It’s obviously smaller, and the performance and features are similar to those of the iPad 2, including a non-retina display.
What about the less expensive Android devices? The Kindle Fire products and Nexus 7 are some of the market leaders. They are solid products, but are not as refined as the iPads. These products also limit you to content and apps from Amazon or Google.

The Kindle tablets are good tablets, but won’t have the bells and whistles of the Apple products. The basic 7 inch Kindle Fire is 8 GB and will give you internet access, the ability to stream movies, access to all of Amazon’s apps, and a notably good e-book reader. It does not have a camera, but it’s a nice basic package with a $159 price tag.

Amazon also offers HD versions of the Kindle Fire in various sizes ranging in price from $199 to $499. These tablets range from 16 GB to 32 GB are more like the iPads, with good screen resolution and better performance than the basic Kindle Fire.

Google’s Nexus 7 tablets also fall into the “value” category with a prices starting at $199 for their 8 GB version. The Nexus 7 is a decent product, but like the Kindle Fires, they don’t compare to the iPads in performance and features.

Is it worth the extra few dollars to get the iPad? It depends on your needs. If you are looking to surf the net and play a few games on a basic tablet, maybe not. If you want a higher quality product, a large selection of apps, and the ability to integrate all of your Apple products, then definitely.
