iOS 10.3 Update - Important Warning

iOS-10-3

Apple is expected to release the iOS 10.3 update before the month is out and this time it’s a case of good news and bad news. First, the good news: Apple is changing the file system that iPhones and iPads use from the decades-old HFS+ file format to the new Apple File System. Apple File System offers optimization for solid state storage, strong encryption, better file time stamping (down to the nanosecond), and many storage saving improvements. Ultimately, Apple will move macOS, iOS, tvOS, and even watchOS to Apple File System.

And now the bad news. Since the two file systems are incompatible with each other, once you upgrade to Apple File System, there's no way to convert back to HFS+ without blowing away all your data and reformatting the storage. And when iOS 10.3 is installed, every file stored on the device will be converted from the old format to the new format. If everything doesn’t go exactly as planned—a risk during any system upgrade process—there is a chance you could lose valuable data.

The solution, of course, is to back up your iPhones and iPads before making the update. Cranston IT strongly recommends you do this. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and all that. To create a backup you can either connect your device to iTunes on your computer or back up your data to iCloud by navigating to Settings>iCloud, turning on Backup, and tapping Back Up Now.

The beta version iOS 10.3 shows some other promising updates including improvements to CarPlay and a feature that helps locate those easy-to-lose air pods. We’ll have more on these features in a future article.

Cranston IT can help ensure that all your devices are backed up properly and keep you up to date with the latest releases. For more information, contact us at 888-813-5558 or support@cranstonit.com.
