Unlocking the Power of Preview (Tutorial with Video)

Preview has always been a useful program for reading PDFs, viewing graphics, and running slide shows. Now Apple has taken this program a huge step forward giving you the power to enhance, edit, and modify images and PDFs, all without a separate image editor or PDF tool.

The new Preview is part of the Mountain Lion OS X 10.8 operating system. The following are some of the most exciting new features of Preview.
Highlight, Note and Edit PDFs:

Using convenient tabs at the top of your Preview screen you can highlight and strike through text, insert ovals or rectangles, and add links to other pages or web sites. You can even add tags that can later be used in Spotlight file searches.

Change Order of Pages, Delete Pages and Merge PDFs:

You can also change the order of a PDF’s pages by clicking and dragging, and you can delete pages using the PDF’s side bar. To combine two PDFs, open both PDFs and drag a page from one sidebar to another. To add an entire PDF, just drag the file’s title bar icon to any location in the other PDF’s sidebar. You can even print multiple pages by simply putting all of your images into one Preview window and selecting them all prior to printing.

Fill in Forms and Scan a Signature:

The new Preview also lets you fill in forms. It can detect the areas in a PDF that are intended for text entry, such as underlining and boxes.  Just click to add your text and check or uncheck boxes.
Preview also comes with a signature scanner that can be used with your Mac's built-in iSight camera. Sign a sheet of white paper with a black pen, line it up using the onscreen guides, and take a picture of the signature. Once your signature appears on your screen you can move it and resize it within your document.

Edit, Crop and Resize Images:

Preview’s image-editing features allow you to crop and resize images with a few simple clicks in the Tools menu. Two other helpful functions, Instant Alpha and Extract Shape, give you the freedom to highlight and then delete parts of images, including unwanted background clutter. Both of these functions can be accessed through the Select button. You can also make minor changes to image color, including changing color balance and brightness or adding a sepia tone by using the Adjust Color function under the Tools menu.
