Apple Announces OS X Yosemite
Nothing gets the tech world buzzing like the annual World Wide Developers Conference and with it comes many exciting announcements from Apple. This week Apple announced their new operating system for Mac, Yosemite, which will be released to download sometime this fall. In typical Apple fashion, Yosemite offers a slew of new and exciting features that are sure to revolutionize the way we interact with Macs and mobile devices. Handoff, iCloud Drive, and notifications are just three of the innovative new features Yosemite has to offer.
Ever start something on one device and wish that you could finish it on another? Handoff provides a smart solution that allows users to do just that. When devices are in close proximity to each other, they basically become aware of what the other is doing, allowing users to pick up where they left off on any device. Let's say you are working on a Pages document on your Mac and want to finish it on your iPad, if the iPad is nearby, an icon will display in the bottom left corner, just swipe up and begin working. Handoff also works in reverse, if a user is working near their desktop on an iPhone or iPad, an icon in the computer's dock prompting them to continue the task. Handoff takes all your devices and allows them interact with each other, helping you become ever more efficient.
The new iCloud Drive adds a powerful and much needed feature to iCloud. Before, you could only store specific file types in iCloud, but with Yosemite you can store any file type in iCloud drives. From PDFs, presentations, images, documents, and much more, iCloud keeps all of your information safe and easily accessible. Users can access iCloud drive from their Mac or Windows computer along with mobile devices. If someone makes a change to a document in iCloud Drive, it automatically syncs with all of their devices making sure that you always have access to the most current versions.
With Yosemite, Notifications and Spotlight both get a major overhaul, making them more useful than ever. The new notifications gets a revamped look along with several new features. Like with iOS, view your day at a glance with upcoming events, reminders, and weather. Third party developers can now make their own widgets, making the notification space completely customizable. The improved version of spotlight provides more content at a glance. Now everything from files stored on your mac, maps, and information from Wikipedia is displayed when you search, giving you more information on one platform.
