Stay Healthy with your iPhone

The start of a new year often comes with New Year Resolutions. If you’re like many people, one of your resolutions probably includes getting into better shape. Remembering to stay active and tracking your diet are often big obstacles when beginning a healthier lifestyle. Thankfully your iPhone is here to help. With the Health app that was introduced with iOS 8, there also came Healthkit. Healthkit is a tool that provides app developers the ability to create applications that allow their data to be synced and synthesized within Health. There are many fitness and nutrition apps that now integrate with Health, but which ones are the best?
When it comes to both tracking your workouts and staying in shape there are several apps that are doing it right. MapMyRun, Endomondo, and Strava are the best when it comes to tracking your run or bike ride. All three use GPS technology and integrate the collected data with the Health app, providing you with a nice summary. If you’re looking to use an app to get your workouts going, try 7 Minute Workout. 7 Minute Workout provides daily workouts along with instructional videos that walk you through the process. A more unconventional way to get sweating is CARROT Fit, a workout app that uses guilt as a way to motivate its users. Instead of making you feel good about your workout, CARROT Fit shames you into working even harder during its 7 Minute daily workouts. CARROT Fit also sends your activity to Health along with commenting on activity tracked with other health apps.

If you’re looking for a way to stay on top of your overall health, not just your fitness, give MyFitnessPal a try. With MyFitnessPal you can track all of your meals and exercises. If you’re looking to also track your sleeping patterns, Motion 24/7 Sleeptracker looks at your snoring, heart rate, and annualizes how restful your nights are.

All of the data that is accumulated within these individual apps is sent to the Health app, giving you a way to get an overview of how you’re doing in one convenient place. If you want more applications that can be integrated with Health, view a running list at 9-5 Mac here. Here’s to a healthier and happier you in 2015!
