OS X El Capitan Proves What’s On the Inside Is Important

os-x-el-capitanYou know the old saying. It’s not what’s on the outside, but what’s on the inside that’s important. This seems to be the case with Apple’s OS X El Capitan, coming to a Mac near you this fall. Named after a famous rock formation in Yosemite National Park, El Capitan features system improvements and refinements to its predecessor Yosemite which was more about visual changes to the look and feel, making OS X resemble iOS more closely. With El Capitan, Apple stays with the same look and focuses instead on system and performance improvements.

While Apple products have always been known for being easy to use, El Capitan is touted to offer a smarter and simpler way to access apps and do all the things you normally do on your Mac, such as check email and your favorite web sites, take notes, and search for information. One of the more notable improvements is its launch speed of up to 1.4x faster for apps and 2x faster in switching between open apps.  Apple also improved performance of individual apps with Mail, Preview and Photo all receiving significant speed enhancements.
Splitview makes fullscreen mode more useful by allowing you to view two apps side by side in Full Screen mode. This could be particularly useful when taking notes from web research or even comparing pricing on two different shopping sites.

El Capitan delivers improvements to Apple’s search app Spotlight by scouring even more places to provide the information you need. Spotlight’s ability to recognize natural language is something of a game changer. Now you can type in search criteria just the way you might say it. If you’re looking for an “email confirmation for an office supply order placed in June,” you simply type the words and Spotlight will find it. Another long overdue feature added enables users to move the spotlight search window around the screen to put it where it suits you best.

As with the soon-to-be-released iOS9, El Capitan offers a new Notes app that makes keeping track of and organizing information easy. You can incorporate maps, URLs, and photos into your notes and add bullets to create a checklist. With iCloud syncing, you have access to your notes on any of your Apple devices.

El Capitan will run on any Mac that can run Yosemite and will be available for free after its release. Cranston IT highly recommends not immediately installing new OS releases as there will likely be bugs, and third party apps may not run properly until they are updated to work with OS X El Capitan.  We will monitor and test the new OS upon release and let customers know when it’s best to upgrade.
