Coin: The Electronic Credit Card

Wallets can often feel like a black hole. We all have multiple cards for different accounts. Business expense cards, credit cards, gift cards, rewards cards and more; they junk up our wallet and often have us scrambling at the register. Wouldn’t it be great if you only had one card for everything? Coin is a creative solution that promises to solve this problem by storing all of your cards in one convenient location.
Coin is a physical card, about the size of a standard credit card, that allows you to load all of your cards into your Coin and then select which one you’d like to use. By tapping the small LED screen in the top right-hand corner of Coin, you can flip through all of your cards, tap the one you want and use it to pay for your purchase. To get a card loaded onto your Coin, you use their app and card swiper that comes with the card. Swipe the card you wish to add to Coin, take a picture of it, and then name it so you know which card it is. The app that is used to upload and store your cards can remember as many cards as you like, however the Coin card itself can only hold eight cards at a time. We all forget our wallet or credit card sometimes, but Coin helps remind you if you leave it behind. Using a Bluetooth signal, when your phone gets a certain distance away from Coin, you’ll get a message alerting you might have forgotten it.

While Coin has a lot of exciting potential, it has a couple of downsides. For starters, it’s not yet released, for now Coin is only available for preorder. If you decide to preorder Coin, you can purchase it for $75, 25% off the price Coin will be once it is released. There is no exact release date, but Coin is said to be shipping in Spring 2015. The other problem with Coin is its battery. Since Coin is the same size as a regular card, the battery is very small and can not be recharged. For this reason the battery only lasts about two years. Once the battery dies you’ll have to purchase a new Coin. Even with its downsides, Coin has the potential to be a great product.
