CarPlay Turns Your Dashboard Into an iPhone

CarPlay-iOS

Information and entertainment systems in automobiles can present a love/hate scenario for many car owners. Most of us want easy access to the tools they provide – navigation, audio, climate control – and the bells and whistles they represent in terms of modern automotive luxury, but their often clunky interface and lack of regular updates can be frustrating. Apple’s CarPlay bridges this gap by turning your car’s onboard infotainment system into an iPhone on wheels.

CarPlay works by connecting your iPhone directly into your car’s infotainment system providing access to music, navigation, text messaging, and calls through your phone. This process is also called “casting” because the iOS experience is essentially cast into your car’s dashboard screen by plugging your iPhone into your car with a Lightning cable.

Once you have CarPlay up and running, your dash screen takes on the familiar iOS user interface you’re accustomed to, giving you access to calls and messaging, your iTunes music library, navigation via Apple Maps, and various third party apps such as Pandora, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Stitcher, and more. Once connected, the CarPlay system can be controlled several ways including through your car’s touchscreen and knobs. The easiest way, however, is to use Siri and simply tell your vehicle what you would like to do. You can also have Siri read your text messages aloud and dictate a reply, thus preventing the danger of traditional texting while driving.

The CarPlay system is available in some 2016-2017 makes and models, but the list is growing. To see an updated listing, go here.
